What a wonderful idea to post photos of our grandchildren on the Web site. Here's one of Carmella Star Shaffer, born June 23, 2001 to my daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and James Shaffer of Laguna Beach California. Stephanie labeled this one "Lavender Dreams." Bob

P.S. This past Friday in Vancouver, B.C., I made a presentation to an international audience of august gerontologists attending the World Congress on Aging. The podium was wide enough to have all 47 flags of the countries represented and flanked by two huge theater-sized screens. My last PowerPoint slide was of Carmella. I told the audience that I unashamedly close with her to make the point that all the little "Mellas" of the world born this year will have a life expectancy of 100 years; thus, what we are doing is not just for today's older people but for tomorrow's too.

Update June 13, 2002.

Carole and I are moving to our first new home in 31 years. After having driven approximately 55 miles roundtrip from Spring to the Texas Medical Center for all these years, the prospect of my doing so for another few years was not a pleasant thought. We will move on June 22 to The Park at Memorial Heights. It is only 4 miles from Baylor College of Medicine and 5 from Carole's mother's home; thus, our commuting lives will be a piece of cake. We're also on our way to Laguna Beach for Carmella's first birthday on June 28. Here's a photo of her taken last evening.
