Lee Note 72 Latin Memories July 1, 2001

From Larry Shelton:

Good Morning! Ah yes, Mr. Childress. I had not mentioned him since I didn't think enough folks had any experience with him. I felt he tolerated me. I did work hard there, but never really got the true hang of it... and of course I worked my buns off in the LATIN CLUB.

Martha, I cannot imagine that you had problems there... while I never really noticed any of your grades, I always thought you really "had it together."

Laddie Derden, Martha McKean, Cathy Novosad, to name a few, really did well (did I mention that most of the successful happened to be Catholic). But HE WAS DEMANDING!

And I, too, have used what we learned. But it was not really any fun. I do not believe - did not then and do not now - in leading by fear. Example, unified goals, reward theory, yes, fear no. AND with Sherman, it was fear. I counted myself lucky to have passed each semester!

From Martha Prather

I felt the same way about Mr. Childress, and like Martha Jones, have used the Latin I learned many times in many ways. I'm definitely glad I took it! It made my trips to Italy much more interesting, too!

From Marie Wood Eby:

Re: CHILDRESS

Mr. Childress also drove the girls' bus from Highlands to Lee High School. We didn't especially appreciate him there either. He seemed to enjoy the girls' big petticoats and legs a little too much!
