Lee Note 57 David Oehler June 14, 2001
It has been interesting to learn that I wasn't the only one to have problems with Mr. Wedgeworth and his geometry class. I just couldn't remember the numbers of all those theorems and hypothesis. I faked it for a while but he caught up with that and I began my journey to failing the 2nd semester and a make-up in Mrs. Robson's class the following year. Nice lady.
I really related to Ken Buffington's comments on job availability in 60 & 61. Just having a job became an accomplishment. Things got better with time. About mid-1962, I went to the "Stomp" in Crosby and met Veronica (Necka) Leibham. We married in June 1963 and soon had 5 children, 4 boys and 1 girl. In '66 I went to work for Enjay Chemical (a.k.a. ExxonMobil) in Baytown. I started as an electrician, working several jobs there until 1981 when I transferred to the Mont Belvieu Plastics Plant. I have been there since and am planning to retire later this year.
I have lived in Highlands all my life. The kids did all the youth sports things, I coached, did officer duties, Necka did the team mother thing and Oh, the fundraisers. They all got through High School (Sterling) and three went on to get college degrees (2 Aggies and a Lumberjack).
One of our more memorable events was our 25th wedding anniversary. We planned a big event, had lots of family and friends show up. It was great and it was at the Stomp where it all began.
We have 5 Grandchildren, 3 girls and 2 boys. Two live close and are spoiled terribly. The son and daughter-in-law bear it well and we see them several times a week. The other grandchildren live further away; we see them as much as we can. Thank goodness for the Internet, because one family lives in Oman.
Like is good. Necka and I are married for 38 years now, how time flies. We have a RV trailer and expect to visit a few of the states in the next few years. We take time we have and try to enjoy life as it comes to us.
I have yet to make it to a reunion. I won't make promises for the future ones either, but it is good to run into classmates and visit occasionally. Saw Murray Foreman recently.
Thanks for the memories,
David Oehler
