Lee Note 4 Melvin Johnson March 24, 2001

Melvin Hayden Johnson and I had a phone conversation and I would like to tell you what I learned.

Melvin has been married for over 30 years to his "best friend – Juanita McKay from the Lee class of 1962." They have reared three sons: Melvin Hayden Johnson, Marshall Heath Johnson, and Marc Harland Johnson. Melvin is happy to report that Marc and his wife have just blessed them with a son Mackay Hamilton Johnson (yes, named after his grandmother with a different spelling). No, not just three generations of MHJ but four because Melvin himself was Melvin Hayden Johnson, Jr. These three sons are large men, each over 6’ 4" tall and over 200 pounds. The newest member of the family is on the right track at 13 pounds by his two-month checkup after a start in life at 8 pounds 12 oz.

Melvin has been in the banking business for over 30 years and for the past four years has been President of First Lockhart National Bank in Lockhart just south of Austin. Melvin is also the fourth in line out of 30 people in his family who are Texas Aggies. Although, he lost out on having his sons follow in those footsteps. Hayden went to West Point and Heath and Marc went to Baylor, all being good Baptists.

Melvin has written an article that has been published in an Aggie publication about the men from our Lee class of 60 who went to Aggieland and what they are doing today. He has agreed to share that with us.

Melvin was at the reunion last summer and enjoyed every minute of the three days. He is looking forward to whatever is planned this summer for a get together. More news to follow on that subject as soon as it is set.

I teased Melvin about giving his secretary’s email address. As the good ole country boy that he is, he said to me, "You don’t think I read all that mail first, do you?" Just so you know one of our class is still so busy that they have assistance in this area. Melvin says he does know how to send email himself when he wants to communicate. So send him a note and then be patient so he can reply in due time.

As a University of Texas Austin second generation graduate myself with a third generation graduate daughter, I must say that his work has instilled in me the desire to compile a list of all of us who graduated from UT. So Longhorns, please send me a reply to this note and I will work on such a list. I will try to find a writer for us to compile our history of what has happened to the Lee class of 1960 members who are proud Longhorns!
