Lee Note 106 First Brigadier Report September 18, 2001

To those Brigadiers who couldn't be with us last weekend, you missed a wonderful, heart-warming experience. Over 1000 Brigadiers were recognized at the football game--by decades, beginning with the '30s. Then on Saturday A.M. over 2000 gathered for brunch at R.E.L. The commons, cafeteria and Brig Hall were all packed with laughing, crying, screaming, singing Brigadiers! Our class had 14 in attendance. We truly missed each one of you who was not there. Our own Marty Haynes was congratulated for an outstanding job chairing the planning committee and also was made an honorary Brigadier. With Brigadier love,

Jo Fuller Hinkle

Kay: It was really sad to see the end of the Brigadiers. When you read about all of their accomplishments throughout the years (since 1930) it is so hard to believe that no one cared enough to keep that organization going.

They gave out a great history of the Corps at the brunch. It was fun to go back to the old school and see the Brigadier Hall (which had not changed but seemed smaller than I remembered!) and the old cafeteria (which still smelled the same according to a reliable source!) and lots of the Brigadiers from the years we were there.

I was disappointed at the small turn-out of 1960 graduates. I really expected to see lots of the old gang, but there was a great group there and we had a good time. We had a hard time with the Brigadier song (could not remember how it started, some of the words, etc.), but we made it through. I think we need to change the last part which says "our memories weaving, we'll go on receiving, the Spirit of Lee Brigadiers" to "our memories 'leaving'......!!

I really hope the events of last week did not prevent some attendance. It will take a while to find out all of the changes from that week. Anyway, just wanted to say what a good time I had, how great to see the ones there, and also say what a great job Martha did and how much we all appreciate her hard work. A job well done, Martha!!!

PS. From Kay

I called Martha on a speakerphone Sunday afternoon while I was at Phyllis Busby Owen’s here in Dallas so we could both hear. Martha gave us a thirty minute report of the weekend events. I asked her to send a copy of the Baytown Sun articles to Keith Dutson to post on the website.

I do know that Ann Bridges Winslow could not get a flight out of Denver and was unable to attend. I believe it would be wonderful if each of the fourteen attendees could give us their perspective of the event.

There will be a two hour video produced that can be purchased for $20.00. It has one hour that was prepared ahead of time and played at the brunch on large TV screens. Then the events were taped and they will be included. Contact Kathy Clausen at the Goose Creek Independent School district office to purchase one.
