Carol Altman Arkin, Charlie Coleman & Margie Morris Dolezal
Well, I am home again now safe and sound, however, it took me several days to rest up after my visit. My grandson, Noah, is just full of energy. At 11 months, he is a handful. Lord knows that my visit to San Diego was well worth the trip. Just to visit my grandson would have been enough, but you two topped it off ever so nicely.
I want to thank you both for such a wonderful time. Having not known each other very well at R.E.L., I feel like I have visited a couple of sisters that I haven't seen for many years. Your kindness has truly touched me and for that I will always be grateful. WOW, what class acts you are.
I saw that life has treated both of you very well and I hope you both have much happiness in the future. I had no idea that I was in high school with such a great bunch of people. I hope to see you at the next reunion.
Charlie Coleman
Charlie, Margie and I had a great time visiting. Rather than go to a restaurant, I cooked (that in itself was a miracle), but I wanted us to be able to relax and talk. As Charlie mentioned, none of us knew each other in high school, but I, too, feel as if we now have a special place in our hearts reserved for each other. Just being REL classmates started that bond. Visiting and sharing with one another solidified that bond and made it much more meaningful. We even signed each other's annuals, since we didn't do it when we graduated. It was a kick!
Carol Altman Arkin
As some of you have been reading, Carol Altman and Charles Coleman and I got together in January at Carol's in San Diego. Charles was visiting his son and family and had contacted us about a get together. After several e-mail contacts the date and time were set. I live about 2 hours from Carol, but enjoy driving so this is not a problem and also keep in mind that this is California where we don't talk miles we talk time when traveling.
Arrived at Carol's about 6 pm and we had some time to get to visit. Keep in mind that we had known each other in school, but had never socialized. Carol is a gracious hostess and had extended the invitation for me to stay over.
Around 7 pm Charles arrived bearing a gift of a beautiful houseplant for Carol (nice touch Charles). It was non-stop getting acquainted and reminiscing about school days - the pictures came out as well as annuals.
Carol prepared a wonderful dinner, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Her daughter and son-in-law stopped by to take pictures of us. I do have a great picture to forward and will do so (ed: see above). We even lit a candle for those classmates that we have lost over the years.
Charles departed approximately 11 pm and Carol and I continued to visit before getting some sleep, as I had to be up early to make the trip back home and to work the next day.
This was a great experience and everyone should make an effort to look up someone from the greatest class that Robert E. Lee has ever had. For those that no longer live in the Baytown area, check the addresses from the reunion book and call someone that lives in your area or just send a note to Kay and she will see that the word will get out to others as she did Carol and I regarding Charles. I do believe that my life is richer in getting to know about others in the class and not just to stay connected to those we paled around with in school. We all have our special friends, but each one of us has something special to share with others.
Thanks Carol and Charles for a great evening and special thanks to Kay for all the work she does in keeping the Class of '60 in touch with one another. Hope to see all of you in July at the mini reunion or in 2005 at the 45th Reunion.
